A sleek little program to use for Mac that allows you to take a wide range of notes, edit them, track them, and so much more
An Overview of Mac Notepad
For many years the Windows PC was considered a better option than Mac because of the many different software features that came along with a PC. In recent years, however, Mac has more than closed the gap by developing products that are similar to PC’s programs, and some even stand out as better, such as the Mac Notepad.
This isn’t simply Mac’s version of Windows’ Notepad. This isn’t some little TXT editing tool that basically clutters up your documents folder. Instead, what you get with Mac Notepad is a stylish little document program that’s actually very powerful and features dozens of usable features that differentiate it from PC’s version.
Apimac developed this program and has been updating it frequently. It is currently on version 9.0 and features a ton of bells and whistles. Keep in mind that while you can use this program free for a while, this is only a trial version of the download and you will eventually have to purchase the complete program to keep it.
What Mac Notepad Is and What It Does
In some ways, this is a very simple note-taking utility that’s sleek and light. However, once you open it up, you will find that it’s far more than a simplistic program. This program is very unique, powerful and innovative. You will notice right away that you get an entire toolbar on the side, unlike similar programs, so that you can highlight, annotate, and so much more.
Another thing that most users notice right away is how fast and powerful this utility is to also be so lightweight and compact. In fact, some users find all the many different features on the daunting side. The top of the interface looks pretty simple, with a bunch of text options. But once you really get into the program, you find plenty of other editing, saving and stylistic options that rival even a program like Word.
The top toolbar really relies on context and can be changed and rearranged to your liking. Of course, this will require someone getting used to the program and testing it out a lot. The more you look around, the more features you’re going to find.
Features of Mac Notepad
One of the best features of the Mac Notepad is that it provides for you an inbuilt grammar/spell-checker as standard, which in itself works just as well as a third-party grammar program. So this utility can help you take notes while also helping you work on your writing skills. This is something that a basic version of a Notepad simply cannot do.
Another cool feature is that this little program can actually merge documents of a similar nature. So instead of having to remember what you named a bunch of different files, this program is going to help merge your files to cut down on the number of saves. So when it comes to pure convenience, this is an ideal program for students and professionals.
Pros and Cons of Mac Notepad
Pros
- Can keep notes and so much more
- A very detailed, involved little utility
- Quite fast and super responsive program
- Has a ton of organizational features available
Cons
- Might be too many features for some users
- Only the trial version available for free
There is a noticeable lack of any notetaking app for mac that will sync with an iphone. By notetaking application I mean an application that you can use like a notepad: Write down thoughts on a topic. Come back later and find them. Add a few more notes when you want to. A new application, Shovebox seems to be OK, although it’s still early days…
Firstly to appreciate how seemingly hard this is to do, consider the following apps:
FAILED CONTENDERS
Evernote:
Great for capturing information, but you can’t edit notes on the iphone. STOP PRESS: Evernote can edit notes from the iphone now! Evernote rocks.

Apple Notes app:
Good on iphone but you can’t edit the notes on your mac.

SOHO notes:
My favourite I’ve been a user of SOHO notes for many years, but you can’t even read notes from iphone let alone edit them.

Yojimbo:
again great app but no iphone application apart from webjimbo is too complicated.

Together:
again, it may be a great app but no iphone access to notes and they say they have no plans to develop one.

Devonthink:
again, it may be a great app – a lot more than just notetaking but no editing of notes from the iphone

So there have been various workarounds. Some people have been using contacts to store notes, some have been using draft emails. It’s embarrasing to be a mac user and hear about this, so it’s nice to finally have a solution.
Shovebox:
Shovebox is a new piece of software just for taking notes. It’s got great potential.
Pro’s:
It syncs with the iphone.
You can edit notes on the iphone.
There are rules that automatically sort notes by keywords if you wish.
Amazing selection of hotkeys to grab data instantly.

Con’s:
On the iphone you can only edit the files as text files not RTF (not sure if this will be addressed in the future or not?)
On the iphone app you can’t search notes – only browse.
It’s complicated to actually read a note on the mac! There’s no preview, and I’ve found that sometimes when you click to open the note it doesn’t work.
It cost’s $25.
It’s still almost a beta version. There are some things that are a bit messy, and/or missing.

It will be interesting to see how shovebox develops.

Replyjacksays:April 8, 2009 at 9:01 pm I love shovebox, but comparing it to something like devonthink is a little misleading. Two completely different type apps.
Replyadminsays:April 29, 2009 at 8:55 pm Yes two different apps! But I contacted devonnote support as below:
Can I edit devonthink documents from my iphone?
No, not at the moment. We’re working on an iPhone client, however, which will enable you, among other things, to add notes to your database.

ReplyJakesays:August 11, 2010 at 2:37 pm This is a slightly different subject but i had a trial of shovebox and since it ended, whenever i log in a box will appear notifying me that the trial period is over and also shows me different ways to purchase the software, is there a way to stop this box appearing, I would usually passively quit this but ITS DOING MY HEAD IN! Cheers.
